Parashat Eikev (Deuteronomy 7:12–11:25)

In last week’s parashat Etchanan, Moshe retold the story of how they received the 10 words on Mt Sinai. In this week’s parashat Eikev he continues his story. What struck me in how he tells it in both parashot is how many times he used a form of the word “לישמור: 14 times in Etchanan and 10 times in Eikev! Why so much repetition? We know that when something is said twice that means it is important. But 24 times in 2 parashot!!.. So in this drash I would like to explore what is it we are to “לישמור” and why is it so important? “לישמור” can be translated in English as “to observe” , “to keep” or “to guard” and has 2 majors aspects:

• To do (whatever it is we are to “לישמור”)
• To guard or protect (   “         “       “     “     “     )

So what are we to guard and do that is so important? Sticking to the text only, I made a list of the verses for reference and will summarize how they answer these questions. In Etchanan:

1. The mitzvot – the commandments
2. The mishpatim – the judgments
3. The eidut – the testimonies
4. The chuqim – the statutes
5. Shabbat
6. Our nephesh and our hearts (and we are to guard them “meod”) so we do not forget:

• The covenant
• Our G-d and make idols
• That He is the one who took us out of Egypt and from the house of slavery

In Eikev, Moshe repeats the same admonition but with an emphasis on the consequences of doing/guarding or not doing/guarding, thus the word “eikev” which means “as a consequence of”. So as a consequence of our doing/guarding of the above list would be that:

1. We will possess the Land
2. G-d will do good to us
3. We will be strong
4. We will have length of days
5. We will have rain, grain, wine, oil, grass in our fields, eat and be satisfied
6. Hashem will drive out all the nations mightier than us

But the crux of the matter comes in chapter 10:12-13 and I believe it will show us why it is so important.  

D’varim 10:12-13 And now, O Israel, what does the Lord, your God, demand of you? Only to fear the Lord, your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, and to worship the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes, which I command you this day, for your good.

יועַתָּה֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מָ֚ה יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ שֹׁאֵ֖ל מֵֽעִמָּ֑ךְ כִּ֣י אִם־לְ֠יִרְאָ֠ה אֶת־יְהֹוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ לָלֶ֤כֶת בְּכָל־דְּרָכָיו֙ וּלְאַֽהֲבָ֣ה אֹת֔וֹ וְלַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּכָל־לְבָֽבְךָ֖ וּבְכָל־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ שְׁמֹ֞ר אֶת־מִצְוֹ֤ת יְהֹוָה֙ וְאֶת־חֻקֹּתָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָֽנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּ֑וֹם לְט֖וֹב לָֽךְ :

Three things stand out in this request:

1. We are to fear Him
2. We are to love Him
3. We are to serve/worship Him with all our heart and nephesh by doing/guarding the commandments and statutes.

Ramban says: “Love motivates people to serve; fear prevents them from sinning” Nevertheless both love and fear are emotions, so how can G-d demand them? Don’t they exclude each other? Imagine in today’s mindset if a man came to a woman claiming he loved her and wanted to marry her and said: Fear, love and serve me and all will be well with you, I’ll protect you and provide all your needs, you will lack nothing. But if you don’t fear, love and serve me with all your heart by doing everything in the way I tell you, then I won’t protect you, I won’t provide for you, you will lack in everything and I will kick you out of my house! Seriously?? What woman would accept this today? So let’s take a closer look at these 3 things we are asked to do and see if we can decipher what Hashem means:   I – Fear Him: Our rabbis say there are 2 kinds of fear: one is a sense of awe and reverence and is harder for ordinary people to achieve. The second and lower is a visceral fear of punishment. I was also told by a linguist that the phrase “the fear of God” is an expression used in ancient times to simply designate which god a nation or a person serves, allowing them to distinguish between their many gods. But how did they come up with such an idiom? Keeping all these things in mind, I suggest it has to do with man’s primal need for survival in a world full of dangers. This would cause us to seek a God that is greater than whatever threatens us so we could come under his protection. A god greater than our enemies and our fears has to be greater than us and is to be feared as well! We would not want to offend such a god, but then we would be protected from any dangers. The more powerful the god the more he is to be feared. But what if Israel’s God demonstrated to us that he was greater than all the other gods, what if He defeated them through great signs and wonders, what if He rescued us from the slavery imposed on us by the people who serve them? And what if He did it just because He loved us? Wouldn’t you both fear and love Him? Isn’t it what Moshe was trying to tell us in D’varim 4:33-35: “Did ever a people hear God’s voice speaking out of the midst of the fire as you have heard, and live? Or has any god performed miracles to come and take him, a nation from the midst of another nation, with trials, with signs, and with wonders, and with war and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great awesome deeds, as all that the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? You have been shown, in order to know that the Lord He is God; there is none else besides Him.” I could fall in love with a god like that, couldn’t you? II – Love Him: But what does G-d mean by love? Is it the Hollywood romantic version, with goose bumps and starry eyes that dissipates when we reach our threshold of conflict? No, rather it is defined by the covenant Hashem cuts with us and which describes how we are to treat Him and others. As Rambam says: since love is an emotion, how can one be commanded to love? The Torah answers this question saying that when one meditates on God’s great and wondrous deeds and creations, and sees in them His incomparable and infinite wisdom, one will immediately come to love and praise Him and be filled with longing to know Him. Again isn’t that what Moshe is saying in D’varim 10:17-18: “For the Lord, your God, is God of gods and the Lord of the lords, the great mighty and awesome God, Who will show no favor, nor will He take a bribe. He executes the judgment of the orphan and widow, and He loves the stranger, to give him bread and clothing.” Such beautiful wisdom! Righteousness, justice, mercy and truth are the consistent expressions of His ways and the motivators behind this love HaShem showers on us. And in them we must be trained and tested much like any athlete would, who wants to finish his race. This is why Moshe says in D’varim 8:2: “And you shall remember the entire way on which the Lord, your God, led you these forty years in the desert, in order to afflict you to test you, to know what is in your heart, whether you would keep (הֲתִשְׁמֹ֥ר) His commandments or not.” True love requires no less than that! This brings us to the last requirement: III- To serve/worship Him with all our heart and with all our nephesh and do/guard (“לישמור”) the commandments and statutes of Adonai. This tells us that to worship Adonai, that is ”לַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה”, simply means to “לִשְׁמֹ֞ר אֶת־מִצְוֹ֤ת יְהֹוָה֙ וְאֶת־חֻקֹּתָ֔יו”. There is that important word again and the crux of all this! We have now come full circle! Moses started out with telling us we needed to “לישמור” the whole mitzvah, but now he says that by fearing HaShem and loving Him we will not only be retrained by His commandments, but also be set free by them to lead a wonderful life able to perform them as the basis of our intimate relationship and worship of Him ! Yes, it is important to guard them and at the very core of our beliefs and relationship with Hashem! So going back to my analogy of a man coming to a woman he loves and wants to marry, HaShem comes to us His people, you might even say as a knight in shining armor would and this is what He says: “Don’t fear your enemies and all the dangers out there, don’t fear anything that puts you in bondage, not even yourself. Fear me instead because I am more powerful than any of these and I can destroy them all. See, I am already rescuing you from them. You no longer have to be oppressed by them or serve them. I am giving you all you need to get rid of all the bad habits that enslaved you in the past and will not allow anything to hold you captive. This is true love I have for you and true love is what I want from you for “I will marry you forever, in righteousness and justice, in covenant faithfulness (חסד) and mercy. I will marry you in faithfulness and you will know me intimately” Hosea 2:19-20. Only trust me, love me back, cling to me, guard yourself and your mind from seeking other sources to bring you freedom, because if you do I will let you come under the power of these other sources and they will destroy you!” As a woman, I find this very romantic and hard to resist! In conclusion, I would just like to remind us of the words we sing as we raise the Torah scroll on Shabbat: “This is the Torah that Moses placed before the family of Israel at the command of HaShem, by the hand of Moshe. It is a tree of life for those who grasp it and those who uphold it are happy . Its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace. Length of days are in its right hand and in its left are wealth and honor. It pleased HaShem for the sake of its righteousness to make the Torah great and glorious. SO YES, it is important to “לישמור” to guard and to do what it says and also our nephesh and our hearts lest we forget our G-d who took us out of bondage and be destroyed by the forces of this world! Deut 11: 16 Beware, lest your heart be misled, and you turn away and worship strange gods and prostrate yourselves before them.			טזהִשָּֽׁמְר֣וּ לָכֶ֔ם פֶּן־יִפְתֶּ֖ה לְבַבְכֶ֑ם וְסַרְתֶּ֗ם וַֽעֲבַדְתֶּם֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וְהִשְׁתַּֽחֲוִיתֶ֖ם לָהֶֽם:
